Peer to peer networking is mostly positive. The majority of people using free social networks such as Facebook, Skype benefit from it as it helps people keep contact. For example, people from different continents can talk frequently talk to each other without paying a dime. Skype has become the best way of communicating with family and friends for international students. Social networking can also have negative repercussions such as stalkers, identity theft. Here is a small article about a man who recently plead guilty to "sharing images of child pornography" through a peer to peer computer network: http://www.newschannel10.com/story/14510638/tucumcari-man-pleaded-guilty-of-child-porn-charges

With every good comes something bad. I absolutely agree with this post. Facebook, used by many, has become a tool used by every college student I've come across. Just recently my group and I used Facebook to communicate with each other about our presentation. We decided to use it since most students spend the majority of time on Facebook and figured it would be the fastest way we could communicate with each other. However with that comes the negative. I actually created two Facebook accounts, one for school and a separate one for friends and family from whom I grew up with. There has been to many cases where employees have gotten fired over their Facebook posts, and even though I don't post anything derogatory, I still am afraid I might offend someone who could actually be my boss. Having said that, I'll go back to my first statement, with every good comes something bad.
ReplyDeleteI actually just read an article that combines the dangers of PSP sharing as well as the dangers of unsecured wireless networks. A man in Buffalo, NY had his home invaded by police in the middle of the night - they even threw him down the stairs before handcuffing him. They found someone on a PSP network sharing a ton of child pornography, so they contact the ISP and tracked the person using their IP address. It turned up as the guy's unsecured wireless network. After going through his computer, cell phone, etc., they figured out that it wasn't him that was sharing all the child porn - it was his neighbor that was jumping onto his network. This should be a lesson to anyone that lives in an apartment building or in close proximity to others: you have no idea what someone may be using your network for, so put a password on it!
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to say there's many sick people in the world. I think P2P networks are overall good. Unfortunately, like Samantha said, with every good comes something bad. I overheard someone talking about how they may in the years to come have people have specific accounts to log in to the WWW. Although that would violate privacy even more, I wonder if it would help cut out all the sick individuals from using the WWW for crime and etc.
